Feel super excited to share with you a productive tip from David Allen (one of the best leader about productivity) and Tony Schwartz (author and founder of The Energy Project focus on productivity at work …)  concerning the 4 dimension of energy.

 

Too many of us still thinking we can run ourselves like machines 24/7 and guess what ENERGY is my cornerstone, my OXYGEN to feel, act and be at my best : 

  • WORK WISE : I want to be productive, prolific, focus … 

  • RELATION WISE : I want to be present and fun for my family, community, partner … 

So _ when we speak about productivity most of the time : it’s TIME MANAGEMENT … 

AGT : American Got Talent … BUZZER NO …

it’s far better to start with your IDENTITY (who you are) and your ENERGY :

  • If you feel energized, focus : one hour of work can be very prolific. 

  • If you feel completely depleted : 1 000 hours of work can be completely useless.

Take this equation, and I do think even a 1st grade is able to understand, some of smartest people in the room not … I experienced turn over of 80 % in some department I worked for : management really don’t CARE.

But

Let’s move it differently and thanks to OPTIMIZE.ME for a nice equation : 

➡️ GENIUS WORK = (ENERGY * FOCUS * WIN) ^ consistency


We have :

✅ ENERGY : is it a 1 or a 10 for you?

✅ FOCUS : same question + are you able to focus when you want and how long you want?

✅ WIN : what is important now ? Respect the Pareto law 80 | 20

And consistency : it’s the magic sauce on the long run, the exponential effect. 

If you have 1 for energy, 1 for focus and 1 for WIN … that’s mediocre work. But put a 10 * 10 * 10 = AWESOME and do it consistently if will be CRAZY AWESOME. It’s all about you and your routines. A tiny habit can change the long run …

So GUESS what !!!

ENERGY is the missing point of many management and self-development books as well as practice in many corporate. If you don’t respect your body on long term you disrupt your LIFE in a pretty bad way. Human beings perform better when they respect rhythms. Be CIRCADIAN … You are totally on fire during 90 minutes (DEEP WORK) and totally off for 20 | 25 minutes. And don’t check your email, iPhone … be off : meditate, walk, have a nice chat, touch a tree or play with your cat. Respect your body and your mind. By doing that you will be more productive, creative and connect with your inner strength.

So let’s dive in together : 

THE 4 DIMENSIONS OF ENERGY 

 

✅ Physical 

You need to respect some key pillars like eating, moving, sleeping, relaxing well. How do you respect these pillars ?

In a sleep deprived society the lack of sleep cost billions and is the best way to depression for many of us. Do you move enough? We are not only social animal who are looking for connection, we are designed to be in constant motion. The paradox, in this society you can be an active sedentary as like me when I was working for APPLE.

My day to day tempo was : 1 hour a fitness and 8 hours in front of computer with 2 breaks of 15 minutes and half an hour desk to desk for eating. In that case, and we are in a company pretty focus on the well-being with lot of workshop …,  you don’t respect your circadian rhythm and can take few kilos very easily (a lot of temptations : from soda machine to candies …).  My only way to disrupt that and don’t be conform to a sick society with obesity, cancer and so on … , was to do my way home by walk when it was not raining in Ireland.

Little ps here : it’s important to make a difference between moving and exercising. Exercise (workout, fitness … ) it’s a part of moving. You can move differently by parking your car not closet to your house but 500 meters away, or take steps instead of elevator. Give you the opportunity to move all day long. One pro tip:  instead of doing 2 km of walk in one time during your day, split in two times, it’s better for your mind and your body : 10 000 steps per day it’s a good milestone you can program on your iPhone. Ideally, according to NASA you need to move every 20 minutes. Just put a timer and get up from your chair and do 1 burpee. At the end of the day, you can celebrate a lot of burpees … 10 000 years ago we were used to move 5 hours a day on average. Remember your physiology influences more than you think your psychology : when you walk : stand stall, breath by your nose, feel and act powerfully : power pause attitude. Have your body language right.

✅ Mental 

We talked about that in the GENIUS WORK equation … You need to manage your attention by being laser focus on one thing at a time and be able to shift comfortably from one task to another by respecting tempo aka TIME of in order to avoid « attention residue » from the previous task. Mental is also how you are able to respond over a situation by choosing the best response or to have the mindset to see obstacles as fuel for your grow. Personally I like to mix mental and emotional together. 

 

✅ Emotional 

You are shape by your emotions and your daily actions. If you want to change your future so change your rituals aka habits. So you need to cultivate positive emotions and as a leader encourage people in the same way. An optimist mindset will ensure a abundance of energy, which in turn will bring you constructive results and be able to overcome some obstacles you will meet inn your life journey. 

 

✅ Spiritual 

You work best when you feel there’s a real purpose to what you’re doing … I like to use the word enthusiasm that means god within. In this case, it’s not necessarily a religious one when we are speaking about spirituality. In a previous article « 7 get attitude smart for success » I spoke about the importance to be lead by passion because emotional investment is often a principal driver of success. Believing in a vision bigger than us also gives you a compass to steer by. By defining a strong "why we do what we do" we are creating positive vibes.

So to conclude keep in mind : 

If you feel energized : you honor your body and your mind by adopting some key habits by knowing how to relax, move, sleep and eat well and secondly you impact positively your work and your relation.

  • Spiritual
